A Sea of Energy

Believe_21_Web_Tile_Pixles_930x500_Explorer

Energy Observer, which is a former racing catamaran turned ship of the future, has been sailing around the world on a six-year odyssey as the first energy-autonomous hydrogen vessel!

Toyota is an official partner of Energy Observer and has been an avid supporter of its project from the start.

Energy Observer is electrically propelled with a mix of renewable energy and an on-board system that produces carbon-free hydrogen from sea water.

Energy Observer started its journey from France in 2017, on a mission to meet people in 50 countries and 101 ports with the message that a cleaner world is possible and that innovations can open new doors.

Toyota’s fuel-cell system in the Toyota Mirai (the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen-fuel-cell electric vehicle) has proven its value as a propulsion system in cars. Toyota has also recently been exploring the use of its fuel-cell system in other applications, such as buses and trucks.

Toyota is a company aiming to develop a hydrogen society based on our challenge to ‘Establish a Future Society in Harmony with Nature’, which is set out in the global Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, previously mentioned in Believe magazine (issue 12).

This has enabled us to align with Energy Observer’s mission and activities. Our work together has included adapting a hydrogen fuel-cell system for maritime applications, and this has led to the introduction of Toyota’s maritime fuel-cell technology and systems. We’re excited about this technology.
