Toyota New Zealand is delighted that the Corolla won Safest Car at the 2018 AA Driven New Zealand Car of the Year Awards, as the award acknowledged the class-leading safety systems in the car.

“We’re thrilled with this award as the new Corolla is Toyota’s most technologically advanced compact car,” says Neeraj Lala, Toyota New Zealand’s General Manager of Product and New Vehicles.

“Safety and reliability have always been the cornerstone of our product strategies for customers and Corolla has always been the benchmark,” says Mr. Lala. “Our new models definitely continue this strong legacy.”

Locally, Toyota has sold over 30,000 new vehicles with the Toyota Safety Sense package, while globally the number has reached 10 million1.

The Toyota Safety Sense package was first introduced globally with the Corolla series, centred on the belief that popularising safety technology is vital.

Toyota’s Safety Sense technology package is now in its second-generation which brings unprecedented levels of advanced safety technology to Toyota vehicles.

Toyota Safety Sense can now detect pedestrians at night time as well as during the day, and cyclists during the day.

The second generation of Toyota Safety Sense includes pre-collision system with autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection (day and night) and cyclist detection (day only), all speed dynamic radar cruise with indicator linked control, automatic high beam, lane tracing assist (LTA) which includes lane departure alert with steering assist, lane centering and sway warning, and the addition of road sign assist (RSA).

The previous lane depart alert system has been updated to LTA which adds new functionally to this innovative safety system. In addition to providing warnings when the system detects the possibility of the vehicle drifting out of its current lane, LTA adds steering assist, vehicle sway warning and lane centering.

In addition to following lane markings on highways and motorways, LTA is able to recognise the roadside even when there is no road marking. When dynamic radar cruise control is being used, LTA is able to use the lane marker or the path of the preceding vehicle to keep your vehicle centred in its lane. It can even operate around curves.

Road sign assist monitors road speed limit signs and then displays the current speed limit to the driver. When using dynamic radar cruise control the driver can quickly adjust their set speed by using the speed limit information recognised by the road sign assist system.

“Customers crave novelty, change and excitement, but at the core want security, solidity and consistency,” says Mr Lala.

“Corolla DNA has remained the same for 50 years, while evolving in terms of the latest safety technology. The new Corolla is a stylish brand-new car with the same Corolla soul.”

“Globally, Toyota is at the forefront of safety technology and we are pleased that this was recognised through this award.”
