The summer of 2019/20 saw the 28th season of the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon, the largest under-16 triathlon in the world.

A record 33,150 Kiwi kids entered this season, but unfortunately only 22,509 were able to make it to the start lines prior to the cancellation of the final six events, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The events that were held were a huge success – providing Kiwi kids with the opportunity to challenge themselves and give the TRYathlon a try.

Of the 20 events scheduled, 14 were completed, with an average 1,608 participants at each event.

For the first time six-year-olds, who are not quite old enough to enter the full TRYathlon, were able to participate in a specially designed ‘Splash & Dash’ event, consisting of a short swim and a 1,500m run. In total 1,337 future TRYathletes swam and ran their way to the finish lines at nine event locations across the series.

Some more mind-blowing statistics: 2,075.2km were swum, 94,328 km were cycled and 33,763.5km were run.

Following the cancellation of the series due to COVID-19, Kiwi kids were encouraged to get out and give it a TRY by completing in DIY TRYs in their own backyards. 2,658 Kiwi kids took up the challenge, with the support of their caregivers, and received their Champion finishers’ medals. But more importantly, they showed us that nothing could stop them achieving their goals.

At Toyota we believe that ‘If you can dream it, you can do it’, which is why we are proud to have been a supporter of the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon since 2009.

Inspiring Kiwi kids to ‘get out there, give it a TRY and achieve a personal best’, the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon helps Kiwi kids to stay active and healthy through a programme of participation where every participant gets a medal!
