Frequently Asked Questions

When is it arriving in New Zealand?

The Hilux BEV is arriving in limited numbers, with small volumes expected to arrive through-out 2026.

What models will the Hilux BEV be available in?

The Hilux BEV will be available in the following grades:

  • Hilux SR BEV AWD Double Cab Chassis (requires Tray)
  • Hilux SR BEV AWD Double Cab Ute
  • Hilux SR5 BEV AWD Double Cab Ute
When will it be available to test drive?

Given the low volume there will be minimal opportunities to test drive. Please contact your local Toyota Store to register your interest or check availability.

Who is the Hilux BEV best suited for?

The battery electric Hilux can fulfil much the same role as its diesel cousin. It would suit commercial or government fleets operating in light industry or in safety roles, such as road or airport runway inspections, that have a low or zero-emissions mandate. It would also be attractive to individual buyers – farmers, contractors, recreational users – who would like a zero-emissions ute and don’t need the heavier towing capability of the diesel Hilux.

Why is Toyota introducing a Battery Electric Hilux?

Toyota has a multi-pathway strategy for the long-term transition to zero emissions transport. The electric Hilux is part of Toyota’s commitment to providing customers with the right vehicle for the right job.

How is the Hilux BEV different from the diesel or hybrid Hilux models?

Both the diesel and electric Hilux are built to the same rigorous quality standards that Toyota is known for. The powertrains are very different. The Hilux BEV runs on an electric battery, so it has a lower driving range than a fully fuelled diesel or hybrid Hilux. The BEV version also has a lower towing capability (2,000kg vs 3,500kg for the 4WD diesel). The diesel also has a manual or automatic six speed transmission, whereas the electric version has electric motors that directly drive the wheels.
