Toyota New Zealand reveals pricing of the 2026 RAV4 range, including the RAV4 Core (Limited) pictured.
Undeniably New Zealand’s most popular car in both sales and customer acclaim, the sixth-generation RAV4 will arrive in the first half of the year with advanced safety technology, two electrified power options and a model to suit all lifestyles.
Customer feedback to Toyota NZ has reinforced the RAV4’s status as a favourite, with drivers rating the SUV for its fuel economy, comfort and reassuring driving experience.
Building on the success of the fifth generation, the 2026 RAV4 range will debut a Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) powertrain and introduce an all-new GR SPORT grade, bringing fresh performance and capability to the line-up.
The sixth-generation RAV4 will arrive in three distinct styles – Core, Adventure and GR SPORT – and each will offer a set of unique features that relate to the purpose of the style. Core will appeal to the everyday RAV4 driver and will offer plenty of options and grades. For a more rugged look opt for the Adventure style, and GR SPORT will be for the SUV driver who loves hitting the road and driving for the pure fun of it.
Underpinning all models will be the very latest Toyota Safety Sense*. Driver peace of mind and confidence lies behind the many new safety features. A significant addition is the emergency response system which includes an Emergency Driving Stop System which triggers an SOS Emergency call, adding peace of mind by safely slowing and stopping the vehicle if the driver becomes unresponsive, for example during a sudden medical event.
RAV4 will be the first Toyota in New Zealand to feature the all-new Toyota Connected Services and link to the driver’s mobile device via the new myToyota app, providing a range of safety, security and convenience features such as SOS emergency call, automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle tracking and remote locking, climate control and vehicle status information.
Toyota New Zealand Chief Strategic Officer, Andrew Davis, says RAV4 continues to set the benchmark for what Kiwi drivers want in an SUV, combining reliability, value and a driving experience that customers genuinely enjoy. “With the popularity of RAV4 we have expanded the lineup even further so it has basically become a brand of its own with a grade for every Kiwi driver, from our core everyday customers to adventurous types and driving enthusiasts.
“RAV4 has become the car for everyone. If you look around the streets and highways of New Zealand during the week you will see families heading to school and sales reps calling on clients. On the weekend, RAV4s hit the highways loaded up with families and friends, surfboards and bicycles. Going places, having fun and getting there in comfort, style and saving fuel at the same time is what the RAV4 hybrid and plug-in hybrid are all about,” he says.
Andrew says the introduction of a PHEV RAV4 is a major step forward on Toyota’s electrification pathway and essentially adds a functional day to day electric vehicle (EV) to the RAV4 range.
“The RAV4 PHEV adds a new dimension and is built for the Kiwi way of life and the access to charging infrastructure that we have here in NZ. It’s pure EV capability makes everyday trips smooth and quiet, while longer journeys are worry-free thanks to its ability to switch to hybrid mode where it uses both the Electric and Petrol powertrains. You’ll enjoy the convenience of electric driving with the added confidence of fuel efficiency and lower emissions when you need to go further,” he says
Andrew says the PHEV RAV4 vehicle might well be the ultimate mobility solution for so many different car buyers – from families to singles to commercial fleet buyers, “The PHEV will provide a stress-free transition from hybrid to electric vehicle and will meet many Kiwi’s mobility needs. It can be charged at home, a public charge station or workplace charging station. In fact, we expect many RAV4 PHEV customers will rarely visit a petrol station as customers can travel well over 1,000kms with a blend of Electric and Hybrid driving, which is great for their wallets and the planet,” he says.
Safer than ever before
The new RAV4 comes with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS)* as standard, it is integral to the vehicle’s operation. Toyota believes safety is not optional, so all drivers have access to the very latest safety technology at no extra cost, no hidden add on’s or added extras.
Toyota Safety Sense in the 2026 RAV4 includes: Emergency Driving Stop System, enhanced acceleration control to prevent unintended movements, front cross-traffic alert, Proactive Driving Assist and upgrades to lane change assist, pre-collision system, and driver monitor camera.
Functions that fit your life and activities
When choosing a new RAV4, customers need to consider first their lifestyle and needs. There are two key decisions before they consider the various grades: do they prefer front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) and do they want Hybrid (HEV) or Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV).
Then consider the Style – Core, which is available as FWD or AWD and HEV or PHEV, Adventure which is AWD and HEV, and GR SPORT which is both AWD and PHEV. Each Style also has a distinctive front grille design and a unique wheel design. All grades have a new multimedia system that offers a customisable home screen, faster voice recognition and a newly designed island style instrument panel and centre console layout.
Toyota expects the Core RAV4 line-up will appeal to both private and fleet buyers. Within Core are a range of grades from the entry level GX HEV in FWD or AWD to the GXL (HEV in FWD, AWD or FWD PHEV), XSE (AWD PHEV) and GR SPORT (AWD PHEV). All hybrid grades have a fifth-generation hybrid system with a 2.5-litre petrol engine and lithium-ion battery that produces a total system output of 143kW, plenty of power for wherever you go in New Zealand. The GXL PHEV produces 201kW total system output.
Stepping up to a GXL, the driver will have a range of extras such as Qi wireless device charger, rain sensing front wipers and 18-inch dark grey alloy wheels.
The higher XSE and Limited grades add further driver comforts and technologies. The Limited, which is HEV only, adds an adaptive high beam system, a Panoramic View Monitor for greater visibility when parking and reversing, a JBL premium audio system, leather accented upholstery and a Panoramic Moon Roof. The Limited also rides on bigger wheels – 20-inch black and machined alloys – shod with lower profile tyres.
Completing the Core Style range is the XSE, a PHEV only model. The XSE is a step up from the GXL PHEV, the XSE will be the only sixth-generation model to offer a two-tone colour exterior paint scheme with five options of an Ebony roof matched with Frosted White, Avant-Garde Bronze, Massive Grey, Deep Sea Blue or Emotional Red.
Standing in a Style of its own is the more rugged looking Adventure. The RAV4 HEV Adventure is designed for owners who love to hit the outdoors and need a capable vehicle to get to the head of a mountain bike track or a remote camping spot. The Adventure has a design and finish tailored for outdoor lifestyles and light off-road technology, along with unique large over fenders. The rugged styling of the Adventure is completed with angular bridge roof rails and 18-inch matte grey alloy wheels.
Inside, the Adventure continues the outdoor lifestyle theme with extra illuminated entry and back door LED lights. The Adventure features harder wearing synthetic leather seat material in either black or mineral and front seat heaters for those living in New Zealand’s colder areas. The Adventure and Limited HEV models now feature a redesigned seat with a wider base and enhanced back support for greater comfort.
All new RAV4 GR SPORT
The RAV4 GR SPORT is a product of Toyota’s commitment to making ever-better motorsports-bred cars. The GR SPORT model takes the RAV4 original model as its base and spices it up to create a car that is focused on on-road driving performance through finely tuned suspension and functional beauty.
Andrew Davis says the RAV4 GR SPORT utilises the knowledge gained from Toyota’s motorsports activities to create a vehicle that is a pleasure and joy to drive. An additional 70,000 hours of engineering development went into the design and development of the RAV4 GR SPORT.
“RAV4 GR SPORT combines the best of both worlds with a focus on driving performance. It’s less about recreation and all about on-road performance. The GR version is specifically designed for on-road performance whilst keeping the benefits of an SUV for practicality. It’s practical, has the fuel efficiency benefits of a plug-in hybrid SUV and then adds a driving set up that is designed to put a smile on your face,” he says.
The GR SPORT includes unique 20-inch black machined alloy wheels. Each wheel is 2.2kg lighter than the equivalent sized 20-inch wheel on the XSE and Limited Hybrid. The GR SPORT combines the potent AWD PHEV powertrain with unique dynamic enhancements including high performance dampers, a stiffer rear suspension brace, retuned suspension and power steering calibration, and a 20mm-wider wheel track to deliver performance and agility on the road, more so than for recreation.
As the new RAV4 flagship, the GR SPORT will be offered exclusively with the new PHEV AWD powertrain, with its sixth-generation 2.5-litre hybrid system, 22.7kWh lithium-ion battery, and powerful front and rear electric motors generating a total system output of 227kW, making it the most powerful RAV4 to date. All PHEV grades include a 1500 watt plug capable of powering small appliances while on the road.
To complete the GR SPORT style, the interior features include aluminium sports pedals, GR SPORT Synthetic leather and Brin Naub® microsuede accented seats. It also has an exclusive steering wheel with the GR logo, soft padded knee pads, GR SPORT branded front scuff plates, paddle shifters and unique interior stitching alongside red brake calipers with the GR logo, which adds a sporty touch to the exterior. Both the GR SPORT and Limited HEV feature a shift-by-wire system with a sleek metallic and gloss-black finish, delivering a premium feel and sophisticated design.
Colour options to delight
A wide variety of exterior colours will be available across the three Styles. The GR SPORT will be available in five colour options: Frosted White, Massive Grey, Urban Rock, Eclipse and Emotional Red. Adventure will be available in Glacier White, Massive Grey, Urban Rock, Eclipse and Emerald Surf.
Core will be available in a range of 10 colours, depending on the grade. These include Glacier White, Frosted White, Deep Sea Blue, Eclipse and Massive Grey, Urban Rock, Emotional Red, Avant Garde Bronze, Emerald Surf.
