An unexpected panic attack on a morning commute in London lead Mentality’s founder, Hugh Gunson, to uncover his own hidden battle with mental health – something that came as a shock to the Kiwi bloke with a self-confessed “She’ll Be Right” attitude.
After moving home to New Zealand, Hugh soon realised he wasn’t the only one finding it hard to keep his mental health on track – one in five Kiwis experience some form of mental health struggle, a staggering number of which are men.
Mentality is a low-alcohol craft beer created to support the positive mental health movement in New Zealand, connecting Kiwis blokes with their mates and encouraging open conversation around mental health struggles. Mentality seeks to remind Kiwi men that mental health is a part of normal, everyday life, and isn’t something that needs to be kept quiet. Ten percent of all profits from Mentality’s business go to a range of mental health charities across the country, including the I Am Hope Foundation.
Pre-pandemic, Mentality was poised to launch into a variety of hospitality venues throughout the North Island, starting in May 2020. COVID-19 meant that the business’ brewing dates were pushed back by four months, significantly delaying this launch while the business continued to incur costs. Concerned about the mental health of small business owners nationwide, Mentality are keen to get their product and message out to as many people as possible over the next few months.
As a fully NZ-owned business with 10% of profits going straight back into the community for the betterment of the public’s mental health, Mentality were a very deserving winner of Toyota’s Small Business Driver initiative. Having access to a Toyota Highlander has improved the businesses’ ability to connect with new retailers in the hospitality industry, and the Mediaworks advertising package has enabled Mentality to get their product and message out to customers and the public through new channels.
For delicious, quality, low-alcoholic craft beer that simultaneously is supporting men’s mental health in New Zealand, you can’t go past Mentality. Visit their website for a list of retailers across the country: https://mentality.nz/
