Small Business Driver: Kina NZ Design + Artspace

Kina-960x540

Located in New Plymouth’s western precinct, Kina NZ Design + Artspace was established in 1999, in the historic Exchange Chambers Building (one of the oldest timber buildings in central New Plymouth, constructed in 1894).

The design store and gallery showcases the vast creative talent Aotearoa has to offer, bringing you an ever evolving and changing experience (instore and online), with new works of jewellery, sculpture, ceramics, glass, prints, homewares and original paintings on display.

Owner of Kina NZ Design + Artspace, Luella Raj, has an eye for sourcing the best emerging artists as well as nurturing long standing relationships with New Zealand’s leading makers. She is extremely passionate about supporting artists and providing a platform for their work and since 2001, she has worked alongside artists, building and fostering a close knit, open creative community.

“Kina is a conduit between New Zealand’s makers and art & object collectors. We understand the value of connecting our clients with pieces that fit their home or workplace and their personality, or as the perfect gift for a loved one”, says Luella.

Pre-pandemic, Kina was sustaining a period of growth, upskilling staff and expanding the business through various channels. Levels of lockdown and social distancing requirements meant that Kina was required to close their doors for a considerable amount of time in 2020, pushing their expansion plans to the side due to financial losses, an unpredictable income and a volatile economy.

Toyota New Zealand identified Kina as a deserving winner of their Small Business Driver initiative for numerous reasons, but primarily due to their support of local artists, as the success of Kina is vital to their success. Luella and the Kina team have been putting their Toyota Highlander to good use since receiving it, travelling across the country to visit artists in their studios.

The Highlander’s large boot space has also proved extremely handy for moving sculptural works from city to city, something the business previously had to hire a trailer for.

By supporting New Zealand based artists and providing a platform for emerging artists, Kina bring quality and consistency to their store. Kina is the perfect place to find gifts or beautiful objects for your home and lifestyle.
