Toyota adds double cab to safer Land Cruiser 70 series

Toyota has upgraded its Land Cruiser 70 Series range with new double cab versions and improved safety across the line-up.

The new double cab body style joins the single cab, hard top (or Troop Carrier) and wagon. Like the single cab, the double cab cab-chassis will be offered in standard and LX grades. The hard top is available exclusively in standard grade, while the wagon has LX specifications.

The key safety feature is the adoption of ABS anti-lock brakes on all models. The ABS will operate when the vehicle is in H2 and H4 modes, except when the optionally available differential locks are engaged. Rear brakes have changed from drum type to disc type to support the ABS operation.

Toyota New Zealand General Manager of Product Planning, Neeraj Lala said, "Land Cruiser 70 has a fantastic reputation in New Zealand as a work horse that's invaluable in many commercial and rural communities. We know there's been local conversion of the short wheelbase wagon variant to turn it into a double cab with cab-chassis, so we're pleased to announce that a factory-made longer wheelbase version is now available."

The Land Cruiser 70 wagon has new front bucket and rear seats, and the improved seat designs have been fitted to double cab models. The new seats have an extended seat cushion made from visco-elastic foam and an additional 30mm of fore/aft slide adjustment. The rear seat in these models has a new 42mm longer cushion for added comfort.

Fuel tank capacity has increased in wagon models from 90 to 130 litres, with the fuel tank mounted between the chassis rails. The double cab versions share this 130 litre fuel tank. The hard top version gains a sub fuel tank with an additional 90 litres, taking the total capacity to 180 litres. To accommodate the sub fuel tank, the hard top model's full sized spare wheel has moved from under the floor to be mounted on the rear door.

The dash design has been improved for all variants, with a new front storage compartment / cup holder with 12V accessory power socket. Wireless door locking has been added for all LX grade models.

All Land Cruiser 70 Series models have a turbocharged high pressure direct injection common rail V8 diesel engine, five speed manual transmission, two speed transfer and power assisted steering. Standard grade models have 16 inch steel wheels, while the LX grade has 16 inch alloy wheels.

Six exterior colours are available, with bluish grey fabric seats. The rear seats of the 11-seat hard top model are vinyl for improved durability.

The recommended retail price for the Land Cruiser 70 double cab is $73,390, while the LX version is $79,590.
