Hybrid Battery FAQs
Answers to Your Most Common Questions
It depends on your driving habits, how often you drive, the hybrid model, and any long periods of inactivity. If you are concerned about your hybrid battery performance, contact your local Toyota Store.
As with any battery, the hybrid car battery will naturally discharge over time. Using your car will keep the hybrid battery charged and within a healthy operating voltage. If your car is not used for an extended period of time, the battery may discharge below its normal operating range, which would influence the battery’s performance and lifespan.
Hybrid cars use their internal combustion engine and feature regenerative braking technology. When you brake, a generator produces additional electricity, which helps recharge the hybrid battery.
A hybrid battery ranges from 150–300 volts and is designed to work with the car’s high torque drive motor. A conventional engine 12 volt battery is made to run the car’s electrical systems, like the audio system and electric windows. These are much smaller in size and power.
Most hybrid batteries will take 2 to 3 hours to replace. They should only be replaced by trained professionals – please don’t attempt to do it unless you’re a professional automotive engineer or dismantler.
Some Toyota hybrids are rated to tow. Contact your local Toyota store to see if your Toyota hybrid is rated to tow and if a Toyota Genuine Towbar is available.
Yes you can jump start a hybrid car using the same method as jump starting a conventional car. The 12 volt battery still needs to have sufficient charge in it to liven up the high voltage hybrid system.
This is not recommended. The engine starting power in a hybrid car comes from the high voltage hybrid battery not the 12v battery. Therefore, the 12v battery in a hybrid is just there to supply electrical power for auxiliary function, not to start an engine.
No. Toyota hybrid batteries used to be made from Nickle Metal Hydride, but these days, Lithium Ion battery technology is more commonly used in new-generation hybrid cars. And of course, Toyota Genuine Hybrid Batteries are specifically designed for Toyotas and are manufactured using Toyota’s proven production processes.
No, we don’t directly offer a hybrid battery rebuilding service, but we do provide a recycling process for old hybrid batteries.
The clearest warning is a hybrid system battery warning light on the dashboard of your hybrid car, but other warning signs include decreased performance, increased fuel consumption, and unusual noises. Please contact your local Toyota Store if you notice these signs.
Trade Garage means any automotive repairer actively operating as a GST registered business that purchases Parts directly from a Toyota Dealer.
