RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid: electric where it matters, freedom where it counts

RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid: electric where it matters, freedom where it counts

Kiwi drivers will have a practical, no-compromise way to step further into electrification via New Zealand’s most popular new vehicle, with the first-ever Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) offered to New Zealand drivers.

Arriving soon, the RAV4 PHEV blends electric driving for everyday use with the flexibility and confidence of Toyota’s proven hybrid technology – making it a natural fit for New Zealand lifestyles.

Toyota New Zealand Chief Strategic Officer Andrew Davis says the RAV4 PHEV is designed to remove the barriers that often hold people back from going electric.

“For many New Zealanders, electrification can feel like an all-or-nothing decision. RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid changes that. It’s a straightforward step that fits into your life; not the other way around,” Andrew says.

“You can plug it in and do most of your weekly driving on electric power but when you need to go on a long journey it still works like a highly efficient hybrid. That flexibility is what makes it so compelling and a perfect stepping stone to full electrification.”

Electric for the daily drive, petrol for longer range adventures

Data from the 2023 Census show that 66.1% of New Zealanders drive either a private or company vehicle to work. The RAV4 PHEV front wheel drive has an NEDC tested driving range of 154km and the all-wheel drive variants have an NEDC tested driving range of 144km. This enables many Kiwi drivers to complete their weekday commuting on electric power alone. Its larger battery can be charged at home, at work or at public charging stations, although charging is never essential as the vehicle continues to operate seamlessly as a hybrid even when not plugged in.

A full charge at home will cost approximately $9, offering a compelling reduction in everyday running costs compared with petrol. When longer journeys are required, the petrol engine works in combination with the electric motors to ensure there is no reliance on charging infrastructure.

“Most people’s average driving trip is around 20kms, well within that electric range, which means fewer fuel stops and real savings over time. In fact, trips to the petrol station may become surprisingly rare for RAV4 PHEV owners,” Andrew says.

“Just as importantly, there’s no range anxiety. The driver has the option to switch between Electric or Hybrid operation when travelling in and out of town, or you can leave it, the vehicle can  automatically switch between the two so you always have the confidence to go further when you need to.”

Built on Toyota’s sixth-generation plug-in hybrid system, the RAV4 PHEV pairs a 2.5-litre petrol engine with electric motors. This delivers a total system output of 201kW in the GXL front-wheel drive grade, while the all-wheel drive XSE and GR SPORT grades produce 227kW, making them among the most powerful vehicles in their class.

Drivers can also tailor the vehicle’s behaviour through three drive modes. Auto mode selects the most efficient combination of petrol and electric power for everyday driving, HEV mode prioritises hybrid operation to preserve battery charge, and EV mode enables fully electric driving for shorter urban trips.

Capability that fits real Kiwi life

The RAV4 PHEV has been designed to reflect how New Zealanders use their vehicles, combining efficiency with genuine capability. All-wheel drive variants offer 1,500kg braked towing capacity, which makes them well suited to towing small boats and jet skis, trailers or small caravans. The front-wheel drive GXL offers 800kg braked towing.

Every RAV4 PHEV grade is also equipped with a 1,500W/220V AC inverter, allowing the vehicle to power small appliances directly. This makes it equally useful on a worksite, at a campsite or as a backup power source in an emergency.

“This is a vehicle that fits around real life, whether that’s commuting during the week, heading away for the weekend or powering equipment when you need it,” Andrew says. “It’s practical, flexible and designed with Kiwi lifestyles in mind.”

Three grades, tailored to different lifestyles

The RAV4 PHEV range is offered in three grades in New Zealand – GXL, XSE and GR SPORT – providing customers with choice across price points, drivetrain configurations and lifestyle needs, while maintaining a consistent focus on electrified performance and everyday usability.

The GXL front-wheel drive grade offers the most accessible entry point into the PHEV range, delivering the full plug-in hybrid experience with 201kW of output, strong efficiency and a comprehensive specification. It features Toyota’s sixth-generation hybrid system, an 11kW onboard charger, 50kW fast charging capability and all three driving modes, along with practical interior features such as heated front seats and a durable fabric interior. Its exterior styling is enhanced with black design elements and 18-inch alloy wheels, giving sporty, more contemporary appearance.

The XSE all-wheel drive grade builds on this foundation with increased power, higher specification and enhanced capability. Producing 227kW and equipped with Toyota’s E-Four all-wheel drive system, it provides improved traction and confidence across a range of conditions. Additional drive modes for trail and snow, along with downhill assist control, further enhance its versatility. Inside, the XSE introduces premium features such as a larger 12.9-inch multimedia display, panoramic view monitor, Synthetic leather and Ultrasuede® accented seats with front seat ventilation, a moonroof and two-tone paint making it well suited to customers seeking both performance and comfort.

At the top of the range, the GR SPORT all-wheel drive grade introduces a more focused driving experience, combining the same 227kW output with a series of engineering enhancements inspired by GAZOO Racing. Developed with significant additional engineering input, it features retuned suspension, performance dampers, a wider track and upgraded steering calibration to deliver sharper handling. Unique exterior and interior elements, including lightweight 20” alloy wheels, GR styling details and a performance-oriented cabin, reinforce its dynamic character while retaining the practicality and efficiency of the PHEV system.

Advanced safety across the range

Toyota Safety Sense is standard across all RAV4 PHEV grades, providing a comprehensive suite of active safety technologies. This includes an enhanced pre-collision system with improved detection capability, driver monitor camera, proactive driving assist, front cross-traffic alert and lane trace assist. Additional features such as blind spot monitoring with safe exit assist, parking support brake, tyre pressure monitoring and smart key entry contribute to a safer and more convenient driving experience.

No compromise electrification

The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid represents a new chapter for one of New Zealand’s most popular SUVs, offering a flexible approach to electrification that can fit into many lifestyles, with no compromise on capability.

“This is electrification without compromise,” Andrew says.

“You get lower running costs, strong performance, genuine capability and complete flexibility, all in a vehicle New Zealanders already know and trust.”

The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid arrives in Toyota New Zealand Stores from June 2026.
