It’s here… all-new 2026 Toyota RAV4 arrives in New Zealand

The sixth-generation RAV4 was launched to media north of Auckland.

Toyota New Zealand has introduced the all-new sixth-generation RAV4, bringing more choice, capability and electrified options to Kiwi drivers.

Launched at Muriwai Surf Club with a drive across to the Matakana Coast, north of Auckland, the all-new RAV4 was revealed to media and partners by Toyota New Zealand Chief Executive Tatsuya Ishikawa and Chief Engineer Yoshinori Futonagane, who travelled from Japan for the launch, highlighting the importance of the New Zealand market in the global RAV4 story.

The latest generation builds on a nameplate that has become a staple of Kiwi roads, evolving with a sharper focus on performance, including the introduction of plug-in hybrid, and customer choice.

Ending 2025 as New Zealand’s top selling vehicle, beating out utes for the first time in years, the RAV4 has evolved into the near perfect car for local conditions, hitting the sweet spot for design, versatility and fuel saving.

Three distinct styles for Kiwi drivers

Now in its sixth generation, with an all-new look and expanded range of options, the 2026 RAV4 line-up is built around three clear styles: Core, Adventure and GR SPORT, each catering to different lifestyles and ways of driving.

Core models remain the backbone of the range, offering a balanced combination of comfort, efficiency and practicality. Available as hybrid and plug-in hybrid, two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, they’re suited to everyday driving across urban and regional New Zealand, with a smooth hybrid performance and high standard specification.

For those heading out of the city on weekends with bikes or hiking gear, the Adventure hybrid brings a more rugged feel with increased track width and selectable drive modes for gravel, snow and trails.

At the top of the range, the plug-in hybrid GR SPORT introduces a dynamic edge to the RAV4 line-up. Developed through 70,000 additional engineering hours, the GR SPORT boasts increased power from the larger electric motors, making it the most powerful RAV4 Toyota has ever built. With performance focused tuning and distinctive styling, the GR SPORT is aimed at drivers wanting sharper handling and a more engaging on-road experience, while still retaining the versatility expected of an SUV.

Plug-in Hybrid joins the RAV4 family

Arriving at a time when fuel use is top of mind, the big news for this RAV4 generation is the introduction of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option in New Zealand for the first time.

Building on Toyota’s established hybrid technology, the plug-in hybrid system allows for electric-only driving in everyday urban use, while seamlessly switching to hybrid operation for longer distances. For many drivers, this means everyday trips can be done on electric power, helping reduce fuel use and emissions, without compromising range when travelling further.

The PHEV system also delivers a step up in performance, particularly in all-wheel drive configurations, combining strong power output with the efficiency benefits of electrification.

Alongside the new plug-in hybrid, the RAV4 continues with an updated hybrid line-up, featuring further refinements to drivability, responsiveness and efficiency.

Smarter technology and connected capability

The new RAV4 marks a major step forward in how drivers can interact with their vehicle, becoming Toyota’s first vehicle in New Zealand with Toyota Connected Services.

Toyota Connected Services enhances your driving experience through a combination of in-vehicle technology and app-based features, designed to make every journey smarter and more convenient. Including features such as enhanced safety and security support, connected navigation, voice recognition, and live weather updates, Toyota Connected Services is designed to support drivers wherever they are.

Demonstrated at the RAV4 launch event on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 April 2026, Toyota Connected Services was used to help drivers identify their vehicles and explore new voice recognition features at various stops on the journey. Covering winding roads, gravel and highways, the route chosen for the media launch highlighted how the RAV4 responds across the familiar environments Kiwis drive every day.

Safety and driver assistance technologies have also been further developed, offering more advanced support while maintaining a natural and unobtrusive driving experience.

A New Zealand launch with global significance

Speaking at the launch event north of Auckland, where media had the chance to drive the new vehicles across off-road and on-road conditions, Chief Executive Tatsuya Ishikawa said the new RAV4 reflects Toyota’s commitment to delivering vehicles that are both globally competitive and locally relevant.

“The RAV4 has a strong connection with New Zealand customers,” he said. “This new generation builds on that foundation with more choice, more advanced technology and the addition of plug-in hybrid, which we know will be important for many customers.”

Chief Engineer Yoshinori Futonagane added that the development concept for this generation of RAV4 was built around the idea that ‘Life is an Adventure’. This reflects the evolution of the RAV4 over the generations and aligns with the changing times and values of a new, younger generation of customers.

“We wanted to enhance what customers already value – electrification, diversification and intelligence – so these were the three core areas of development for the new-generation RAV4,” he said.

Continuing a strong legacy

Since its global debut in 1994, the RAV4 has grown into one of the world’s most popular vehicles, with more than 15 million sold across over 180 markets.

In New Zealand, it has consistently ranked among the country’s top-selling vehicles and remains a cornerstone of Toyota’s SUV line-up.

With the arrival of the sixth-generation model, and the introduction of plug-in hybrid technology, Toyota New Zealand is set to continue that success, offering a RAV4 range that is more capable, more efficient and more tailored to the needs of Kiwi drivers than ever before.
