Captivating Kiwi drivers for six years, the GR Supra leaves behind a legacy of pure performance. (Overseas model shown)
Toyota New Zealand has announced that following the sale of six extra-special GR Supra Track Editions, the current generation will be discontinued after six years on sale in New Zealand.
Since its launch in New Zealand in 2019, the GR Supra has delighted customers with a new take on its legendary rear-drive dynamics, turbocharged performance and eye-catching design, helping to elevate the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing profile locally. Its return under the ‘SUPRA IS BACK’ banner also signalled Toyota’s renewed commitment to building sports cars under the GR brand and to ‘making ever-better cars through motorsport’.
Toyota New Zealand Chief Strategic Officer Andrew Davis said the GR Supra will add to the models lasting legacy in the automotive industry.
“The Supra already had a cult following when the current generation launched in 2019, and we’re pleased to say the GR added new enthusiasts to what has been an amazing Sports car. While this chapter closes, the spirit of Supra will continue to live on at the circuit and in the hearts of our fans and it’s pretty cool to acknowledge this latest iteration with some unique and collectible track editions” Andrew said.
To date, Kiwi sports car enthusiasts have purchased just over one hundred GR Supra here in NZ, in various grades from the automatic transmission-equipped launch version to the upgraded Limited, manual transmission that was added due to customer demand.
“The GR Supra kept the sleek coupe design of the original and modern engine technology partnered for a car that is certainly fun to drive. The driving dynamics of the GR Supra also helped to raise the profile of our wider GR portfolio, helping to pave the way for other exciting models like the GR Yaris, GR Corolla and GR 86.” says Andrew.
While customers will no longer be able to purchase their own GR Supra once the final set of Track Edition units are gone, the Supra story does continue on track: two Supra GT4 EVO entries will race in GT4 this coming summer, and GR Supra is also entering the Australian Supercars Championship in 2026 with a V8 variant in what is Australasia’s most popular motorsport category.
Toyota will field a minimum of four GEN3 GR Supra’s in the Repco Supercars Championship. Two will be run by Toyota’s homologation team partner Walkinshaw Andretti United with Supercars drivers Chaz Mostert and New Zealand’s own Ryan Wood behind the wheel. Potentially two rounds of the Supercars Championship will be held in New Zealand next year.
The GR Supra Track Edition represents the most focused version of the GR Supra, with multiple under-the-skin enhancements including motorsport-inspired suspension components and bracing, making it more agile and dynamic than ever. Chassis reinforcement and a retuned suspension package, together with refined EPS and limited-slip differential control, help to deliver a more direct response and greater composure through corners. A larger front brake package improves consistency and pedal feel during repeated hard braking.
Front-wheel arch aero flaps upgraded front tyre spats, a carbon fibre ducktail spoiler and 19-inch matte black alloy wheels with beefier, red-painted brake calipers set the Track Edition apart from the rest of the GR Supra range.
The GR Supra is powered by a smooth and potent 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine producing 285kW/500Nm, with power delivered to the rear wheels with the assistance of a limited-slip differential.
The final six GR Supra Track Editions will be available for sale later this year. Even after they are gone, the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing philosophy of ‘making ever-better cars through motorsport’ lives on in our line-up - customers can experience it in the GR Corolla, GR Yaris and GR 86, as well as in GR SPORT grades available on selected models.
