Toyota New Zealand is helping preserve the unique Kiwi way of life for generations to come by reducing our environmental impact, contributing to our economy, and supporting our communities, the focus of our 2024/2025 Sustainability Report.
For Toyota New Zealand, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Sustainability for Toyota New Zealand means as much about long term business sustainability as it does about reducing carbon emissions or supporting communities to thrive and prosper.
Toyota New Zealand’s 2025 brand campaign, Let’s Go Places, reflects that broad and deep connection the brand and its vehicles have with New Zealanders and the economy. Toyotas are found everywhere, from busy street intersections to the fleets of rental vehicles and car share programmes, to hauling hay bales over a farm hill, and pulling a boat out of the water at a local boat ramp.
As the country’s leading automobile distributor and retailer, Toyota feels a strong responsibility towards its customers and the communities it operates in. That responsibility is returned in the form of customer trust and passion for the brand.
Toyota NZ Chief Executive Officer, Tatsuya Ishikawa says, when looking through the lens of sustainability, the past year was one of milestones and achievements for Toyota New Zealand.
“For the 37th consecutive year, we retained our title as the country’s number one car brand, a reflection of the loyalty Kiwi drivers have towards the Toyota name and its vehicles.
“We were also named as Number One in the Kantar Corporate Reputation Index for the second year running, making Toyota New Zealand the most reputable brand in the country. Retaining this position comes down to the trust we have built with New Zealanders, through our people and our Stores – their customer-first approach, the community work they do, and the ultimate dedication they have to Toyota. It reaffirms our commitment to excellence, community partnerships and sustainability,” he says.
In a world of increasing competition and challenging economic conditions, Toyota NZ is focused on the long-term sustainability of the business.
“If we are successful, we can continue to connect with our customers and deliver the products and services they need. It also allows continued investment in our decarbonisation goals, in our people, and in the communities we operate in.
“We remain committed to our sustainability objectives. For us, sustainability encompasses environmental, social and economic considerations. We aim for a balance that ensures long-term sustainability and the well-being of our planet and our people. It means delivering exceptional customer service, fostering meaningful partnerships for socio-economic outcomes, and valuing connectedness, innovation and integrity in our workplace culture.
“Over the past year, Toyota NZ has made progress towards electrifying personal mobility. More than 80 percent of all new Toyotas sold are now electrified. That shift is helping cut tailpipe emissions of the vehicles we sell and contribute to the overall reduction of emissions for New Zealand’s transport sector.
“We’ve sold more than 100,000 new hybrid vehicles in New Zealand. That’s the equivalent of adding 33,000 EVs to New Zealand’s road fleet and a saving of 120,000 tonnes of CO2 per year,” he says.
The introduction of Toyota’s first hybrid vehicle, the Prius, in 2003, and the increase in hybrid sales since then to a total of 100,000, has resulted in the recycling of batteries becoming a key focus area for the business. Toyota has been recycling hybrid car batteries by sending them back to Japan for dismantling and has invested in an ecosystem that efficiently collects and processes end-of-life hybrid batteries. Last year, 454 batteries were shipped to Japan for dismantling.
Toyota is committed to being a brand for all Kiwis and continuing to be part of daily life in New Zealand, through the products it sells and, in the cities, and rural towns it operates in. There is a Store or service agent in almost every city and town across the country. It can provide after-market parts and accessories, certified used cars, financial products and services to all Toyota owners, not just those who bought a new car from Toyota NZ.
Through the independently owned Store network, Toyota NZ provides employment, training and career development opportunities for thousands of Kiwis. And with that local presence comes a community connection and support that is unmatched.
This year Toyota celebrated, through its Citizenship Award, the great work our Stores do in their communities. Several examples of local community support initiatives are highlighted in the 2025 Sustainability Report.
We also partnered with New Zealand Rugby to support our Teams in Black. This complements our existing partnerships with Emirates Team New Zealand, New Zealand Olympic Committee and Paralympics New Zealand. Toyota NZ are committed to supporting sport from grassroots through to the world stage.
“Toyota has always believed in the power of sport to unite people and boost morale. We are incredibly proud to partner this year with New Zealand Rugby as we support the teams in black and all the things Kiwis love about their country,” Ishikawa says.
Together, we are going places, with every action today paving the way for a sustainable future that places our customer first and honours New Zealand’s natural beauty and our cherished Kiwi way of life.
