Holidays Records was built off the back of two insights – that music is better on vinyl, and life is better on holiday.
The team at Holiday Records love music – not just the sound, but everything it stands for. They believe that vinyl epitomises everything there is to love about music, in terms of the history, physical nature, warmth of sound, and the artwork vinyl records contain. Located in central Auckland, Holiday Records are New Zealand’s only vinyl record pressing plant and have worked with a range of Kiwi artists to bring the art of pressing records back to home soil.
As a small, local manufacturer, COVID-19 has had damaging effects on Holiday Records through full business closure for the duration of Level 4. With revenue drained to zero throughout this time, the struggle to get back on their feet has been slow for Holiday Records, with turbulent flow-on effects in the months following lockdown — especially with international supply chain issues.
Post-pandemic, Holiday Records have also been faced with increased production costs as shipping from Italy continues to inflate. As a result, margins have naturally been affected as the prices of their products have been adjusted to meet the competitive international market they operate in. The music industry as a whole has felt the detrimental effects of COVID-19, meaning there are also less artists with the working capital to press records.
As winners of Toyota’s Small Business Driver initiative, Holiday Records have thoroughly enjoyed the addition of a Toyota Highlander to their business. Pre-Highlander, Holiday Records drove a single vehicle between three employees, making delivery of records and supplies across Auckland challenging. The Highlander’s spaciousness has proved extremely helpful in reducing the number of trips that need to be made and has reduced the pains of sharing one vehicle!
For an immortalised physical version of your own album (or for picking up a record or turntable from their record store) you can’t go past Holiday Records. Visit their store in Auckland’s CBD, or check out their website: https://www.holidayrecords.com/
