TOYOTA CONTINUALLY AIMS TO IMPROVE THE TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE TO ITS CUSTOMERS, AND TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE (TSS) CONTAINS INNOVATIVE FEATURES DESIGNED TO HELP PROTECT YOU AND YOUR PASSENGERS FROM HARM.

Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) features a newly developed set of active technologies – with the ultimate goal being to reduce traffic accidents as much as possible, helping to create a safer driving environment for everyone, while supporting you in your daily journey.

Around town and at lower speeds TSS can help prevent collisions, while on the open road and at higher speeds it aims to reduce the severity of any impact by supporting your awareness and decision-making with leading safety technology.

WE’D LIKE TO UNPACK SOME OF THE FEATURES OF TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE

BRAKING:

PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM WITH AUTONOMOUS EMERGENCY BRAKING

The Pre-Collision System uses a radar sensor and a camera to determine whether a frontal collision with another vehicle or pedestrian is imminent, and if necessary will warn you with an audio and visual alert to urge you to take evasive action.

It then prepares the Brake Assist system to provide maximum braking assistance. If you do not brake in time, it may also automatically apply the brakes to help you avoid the collision or reduce the speed of the impact.

CRUISE CONTROL

DYNAMIC RADAR CRUISE CONTROL

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control helps make driving safer by keeping a constant pre-set distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead, enabling you to pay more attention to the road conditions and the vehicle’s surroundings.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control operates when the vehicle speed exceeds approximately 40km/h. It maintains an adjustable vehicle-to-vehicle distance by automatically accelerating up to a set speed or decelerating your vehicle to match the speed changes of the vehicle ahead, without you having to use the accelerator or brakes.

ALL-SPEED DYNAMIC RADAR CRUISE CONTROL

All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control maintains an adjustable vehicle-to-vehicle distance by automatically accelerating up to a set speed, decelerating or stopping your vehicle to match the speed changes of the vehicle ahead, without you having to use the accelerator or brakes.

If the vehicle ahead stops your vehicle also stops, while maintaining the appropriate vehicle-to-vehicle distance.

After the vehicle ahead starts off, selecting +RES on the steering wheel or depressing the accelerator pedal will cause your vehicle to start off and the vehicle-to vehicle distance control will resume.

ALL-SPEED DYNAMIC RADAR CRUISE CONTROL WITH INDICATOR-LINKED CONTROL AND ROAD SIGN ASSIST

When overtaking, the Indicator- Linked Control function allows your vehicle to start accelerating as soon as the indicator is engaged. This provides smooth and fast overtaking as the All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system does not need to wait until the vehicle ahead is out of sensor range before accelerating.

By using the speed-limit information recognised by the Road Sign Assist system, you can quickly adjust the set speed to the indicated speed limit. When an upward or downward arrow appears on the road speed sign pictured in the Multi-Information Display, the set speed can be changed by selecting SET or +RES on the steering wheel.

HIGH BEAM:

AUTOMATIC HIGH BEAM

Automatic High Beam is designed to help improve forward visibility when driving at night by making maximum use of the High Beam headlights.

The system uses a camera to detect the headlights and taillights of vehicles ahead, or bright environments such as city streets, and automatically switches between High Beam and low beam as required to avoid dazzling other drivers.

ADAPTIVE HIGH BEAM

Adaptive High Beam is designed to help forward visibility when driving at night by making maximum use of the High Beam headlights. Adaptive High Beam functions in a similar fashion to Automatic High Beam but intelligently enables and disables individual LEDS within each headlamp for precise control over the distribution of light.

LANE ASSIST:

LANE DEPARTURE ALERT

Lane Departure Alert is designed to reduce the possibility of an accident due to you unintentionally drifting out of your lane.

The system recognises visible white and yellow lane markings, and if it detects the possibility of lane departure it, uses a warning buzzer and a visual display to urge you to steer back into the lane.

LANE DEPARTURE ALERT WITH STEERING ASSIST AND VEHICLE SWAY WARNING

The system can also provide assistance by applying a small force to the steering wheel for a short time to help you to keep your vehicle in its lane.

If the system detects that the vehicle is swaying (or wandering) within its lane, which is often the result of a driver who is tired, distracted or not looking ahead, a warning buzzer sounds and the decrease in attention is shown on the dashboard.

LANE DEPARTURE ALERT WITH YAW ASSIST FUNCTION (BRAKE CONTROL)

The system can also provide assistance by applying a small braking force for a short time to help you to keep your vehicle in its lane.

If the system detects that the vehicle is swaying (or wandering) within its lane, which is often the result of a driver who is tired, distracted or not looking ahead, a warning buzzer sounds and the decrease in attention is shown using a display on the dashboard.

LANE KEEPING ASSIST

Lane Keeping Assist is designed to reduce the possibility of an accident due to your vehicle drifting out of its lane.

The system recognises visible white and yellow lane markings, and if it detects the possibility of lane departure it uses a warning buzzer and a visual display to urge you to steer back into the lane.

The system can also provide assistance by applying a small force to the steering wheel for a short time to help you to keep your vehicle in its lane.

If the system detects that the vehicle is swaying (or wandering) within its lane, which is often the result of a driver who is tired, distracted or not looking ahead, a warning buzzer sounds and the decrease in attention is shown using a display on the dashboard.

When the All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system is operating, Lane Keeping Assist applies a force to the steering wheel to help you to keep your vehicle in the centre of its lane.

LANE TRACING ASSIST

If the camera sensor cannot recognise lane markers, the system can continue to keep your vehicle in the centre of its lane using the path of the vehicle ahead. This feature recognises the roadside and when using DRCC it can use the path of the proceeding vehicle to help keep the vehicle in the centre of its lane.

ROAD SIGN ASSIST

Road Sign Assist monitors road speed signs using a camera, then displays the current speed limit to you via the Multi-Information Display and Head-Up Display (if fitted). The system can be configured to provide an audio and/ or visual alert if your vehicle speed exceeds a designated threshold above the posted limit.
