Mandatory Alpha Takata Airbag Update

Toyota New Zealand supports the government announcement imposing mandatory recalls for vehicle affected by the global (alpha) Takata airbag recall. In New Zealand Toyota has identified just over 26,000 Toyota vehicles affected.

The term Alpha specifically refers to older higher risk airbags that are typically in vehicles manufactured before 2006.

99% of affected owners have been advised that replacement airbag parts are now available. Based on recent Toyota imports to the country, Toyota anticipates the final 1% of affected customers to be contacted by the end of April 2018.

Some customers have received up to three letters advising them of the availability of replacement airbags, but have still yet to contact their Toyota dealer to have the work undertaken. Toyota encourages all customers who have received these letters to make arrangements with their local dealership as soon as possible.

Toyota is not aware of any faulty deployments in Toyota or Lexus vehicles in New Zealand associated with the global airbag recall.

Owners of vehicles more than ten years old that have been in NZ for less than 12 months may not have been contacted by TNZ yet. In this case they are able to check if their vehicle is affected and requires repair by contacting their local Toyota Store or Toyota New Zealand.
