Hilux TRD: Two iconic nameplates on one very special edition
Hilux fans will need to be in quick if they wish to secure the new TRD Special edition of New Zealand’s favourite ute.
Arriving with a fantastic array of styling and specification additions that make for one unique truck, only 250 examples of the all new Hilux 4WD Special Edition TRD are available.
As the name suggests, the special edition TRD model is all about striking performance-orientated looks that set it apart from the crowd; an aggressive TRD (Toyota Racing Development) factory body kit outside and premium embellishments inside.
Tough 265/60R18 Hercules Terra Trac AT tyres underline the go-anywhere abilities of the legendary Hilux 4WD, while the special edition’s 18” TRD two-tone alloy wheels add a head-turning aggressive element.
There are plenty of other genuine TRD components included on this exclusive truck too, such as a TRD front bumper with integrated fog lamps, daytime running lights and lower spoiler, a TRD rear step bumper and an eye-catching TRD graphics set and chrome badge. The Hilux 4WD Special Edition TRD is available in three exterior colours; Velocity Red, Ink and Glacier White.
Step inside the spacious Hilux cabin and you’ll find superior high quality extras such as black leather seats and door inserts with contrasting silver stitching, TRD embossed front and rear seat headrests and a TRD branded carpet mat set. The powered driver’s seat also features slide, recline and height adjustability.

The Hilux 4WD Special Edition TRD joins the recently unveiled special edition 2WD Hilux EDGE; part of a series of special edition models making their debut this year to celebrate the ongoing popularity of Toyota’s iconic workhorse, all featuring exclusive accessories and individual styling.
Toyota New Zealand general manager sales Steve Prangnell predicts the TRD will be a sellout.
“Like all Hilux range, strong residual values and proven capability in New Zealand conditions make for an extremely attractive package that buyers can be sure of, both in terms of low running costs and strong resale. The addition of the TRD extras creates an extremely desirable special edition vehicle.”
Meanwhile the mainstream Hilux range continues its unprecedented 30-plus year run as New Zealand’s favourite ute, with 2014 models showcasing one of the most wide-ranging update programmes ever launched at one time for the model.
Increased specification and options in SR5 models, including standard satellite navigation and reversing camera, more safety equipment across the range, a 5 star ANCAP safety rating for 4WD Hilux, an upgraded automatic transmission and the return of the powerful 4.0-litre petrol V6 option for both 2WD and 4WD double cab SR5 versions gives the perennially popular Hilux even broader scope for a multitude of tasks.
