Premium RAV4 offers smart value for money

The next generation RAV4 has arrived, showcasing new engine and transmission options, increased levels of specification across the range and a newly developed premium interior.

Boasting a newly designed exterior, and significant interior upgrades, the expanded RAV4 line-up builds on its solid reputation with Kiwi drivers as a versatile all-rounder, offering generous proportions, smooth power and go-anywhere practicality.

Toyota New Zealand General Manager of Sales and Operations, Steve Prangnell says, "The newly expanded eight-model RAV4 line-up is a range of vehicles that offers so much choice to a huge variety of different lifestyles and uses.

"The entire model has been thoroughly redesigned right across the range. RAV4 now has a modern new exterior look and a smarter, more refined interior. Every RAV4 in the line-up comes packed with features and offers Kiwi customers' exceptional value for money."

The new RAV4 range debuts a sophisticated, aggressive exterior look, showcasing a dramatic design evolution for the model.

But there's much more to the fourth generation RAV4 than a modern exterior makeover. An impressive level of specification is available in the new vehicle, right from the range's two-wheel drive GX entry-point.

The new RAV4 showcases a completely redesigned cabin with a sporty cockpit attuned to the driver. This dynamic design rewards the driver with a sophisticated level of comfort and performance-focused features, while passenger space - both in the front and rear - is more generous than ever.

Occupants will note a more comfortable, quieter ride immediately, with a great degree of engineering effort placed on insulating the RAV4's interior from road, wind and engine noise. NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) testing has seen the development of a new transmission tunnel silencer, along with the placement of vibration damping and sound insulating materials throughout the vehicle. AWD models also receive an innovative acoustic windscreen, featuring a layer of insulation film between two layers of glass which further reduces wind and road noise entering the cabin.

Premium detailing like soft-touch surfaces and carbon fibre-style textures are available throughout the range. A mixture of fabric and genuine leather-style trimmed seating options - including bolstered sports seats for GXL and Limited models - are offered, as is a bold two-tone Terracotta interior colour scheme option for the RAV4 Limited.

All RAV4s boast 60/40 split rear seating with recline functionality and generous cargo space - a trademark feature of the practical RAV4's small SUV blueprint over the preceding three generations - accessed by a redesigned top-hinged back door. This eliminates the back door-mounted spare wheel of old for a practical new alternative. On top specification Limited models the powered back door can be opened remotely and features height-adjustment memory control at the touch of a button to suit low slung garage ceilings and other restrictive environments.

All models are offered with rear parking assist sensors as standard, while RAV4 GXL and Limited customers can also take advantage of the standard reversing camera with fixed guide lines to aid with precision placement of the vehicle.

An intuitive 6.1" touchscreen audio interface featuring an SD card slot for photo display features as standard in GX and GXL models, along with a multi-function steering wheel, stylish blue-illuminated combination meter instruments, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming capability, voice recognition software and USB input. Additionally GXL and Limited grades feature a standard centre console-mounted 3.5mm AUX input.

Entry-level RAV4 GX's receive 17" steel wheels, Halogen headlights, LED Daytime Running Lights, cruise control, air conditioning, a tonneau cover and a cargo net that slots into a recess under the luggage area when not required.

The mid-range GXL model builds on this offering with 17" alloy wheels, a remote Smart Key with push-button start functionality, light control system, dual zone air conditioning, rain sensing wipers, fog lights, tinted privacy glass in the rear and a genuine leather-wrapped steering wheel, gear knob and instrument panel.

Additionally Limited models receive 18" alloy wheels, satellite navigation, a Blind Spot Monitoring system with Lane Change Assist, auto-levelling High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights fitted with headlight washers, dual zone climate control, partial leather seats, power adjustable driver seat with lumber adjustment, driver and front passenger heated seat functionality and a tilt-and-slide moon roof.

Under the bonnet, three engine options give customers a greater degree of choice in matching a RAV4 to their specific needs. In addition to the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol found in the entry level two-wheel drive GX model, there is also a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel available in all three of RAV4's all-wheel drive specification models. A new 2.5-litre Dual VVT-i four-cylinder petrol engine joins the range for the first time and is also available in all three all-wheel drive specification models.

Two variations of the intelligent, advanced six-speed automatic transmission (available with the 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine for the first time) are joined by a seven-step Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with sequential shift function, exclusively available in two-wheel drive GX and GXL models.

On-road, 2013 RAV4 AWD models also benefit from the new Dynamic Torque Control AWD system, which optimises front and rear torque split based on variables such as vehicle speed, steering angle, the degree of throttle and yaw-rate feedback.

In addition to achieving a five star ANCAP safety rating, the new RAV4 has also become the first SUV to achieve the maximum five-star safety rating under the tougher, revised Euro NCAP test regime. With a plethora of active and passive safety measures onboard, the new RAV4 is the safest yet for both occupants and pedestrians.

Seven airbags are fitted as standard - including a driver's knee airbag - along with ISOFIX child seat anchor points. Hill-start Assist Control is offered across the range, while AWD models receive Downhill Assist Control and VSC+ (which integrates the vehicle stability control and electric power steering systems for improved vehicle stability).

Underlining the company's market expectations as a result of the next generation RAV4's arrival, Prangnell continues, "SUVs were the most popular type of new car sold in New Zealand last year, and the outgoing RAV4 proved as popular a choice as ever.

"With a big step up in terms of specification and quality, the new RAV4 range will hit the right note with vastly different customers across the country."

The all-new feature-packed, refined RAV4 is available at Toyota dealers now.
