Passenger sales fuel Toyota's push for 24 years as market leader

Kiwi new vehicle buyers supported Toyota in a big way in October, with five of its models featuring in the top 10 highest selling vehicles for the month, and the company out selling any other make by more than 1,000 vehicles.

Official data from NZTA shows that Corolla and Yaris totally dominated the market, finishing one and three for the month, both in the passenger market and overall. Hilux led the commercial market and finished a strong fourth overall.

Steve Prangnell, Toyota general manager Sales and Operations, says the release of a new model Yaris hatchback during October gave fresh impetus to sales of Corolla's smaller stablemate as Yaris led the segment.

"Yaris wasn't in the top 10 vehicle models for sales in September, so we are looking forward to customers around the country giving their verdict as stocks of the new hatchback begin to arrive. Yaris has also now broken in to the top 10 vehicles for the year to date, which is an impressive result."

"Corolla sales were nearly three times as many as the nearest category rival, showing that customer support for the Kiwi icon remains as strong as ever."

"October's passenger market share of just over 26 per cent was Toyota's highest in any month this year, and helped us to widen the gap on our competitors as we close in on the year end."

Steve Prangnell says Toyota's drive for a 24th consecutive year of market leadership is well on track, with nearly double the sales of the nearest overall competitor year to date, and an overall market share of just under 20 per cent at the end of October.

"We hold a healthy lead on our nearest rival so far this year, which shows that New Zealand buyers continue to put their trust in Toyota."
