The third generation all new Toyota Avensis Tourer has arrived in New Zealand and is safer and more efficient than before.
Designed, engineered and built in Europe, the third generation Avensis is more sporty and athletic in its design with a longer, stronger appearance.
The new model is the second iteration to be made available to the New Zealand market and like its predecessor it is built with safety, efficiency and performance in mind.
New Avensis benefits from Toyota Optimal Drive which encompasses innovative solutions that deliver a powerful balance of reduced fuel consumption, low CO2 emissions and uncompromised driving pleasure.
Toyota Optimal Drive is made possible by new engine technologies and advanced transmissions with low friction components, lightweight compact design and enhanced combustion efficiency.
New Avensis has a 2.0 litre engine coupled with either a six speed manual or Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) which features a seven step sport sequential manual mode and paddle shift controls, including a sport mode.
The new seven step sport sequential manual mode CVT delivers smooth and powerful driving performance and efficiencies similar to a manual gearbox while maintaining the convenience of an automatic transmission.
For a sportier drive, the driver can push the "sport" button next to the gear shift to select a more responsive and power maximising mode.
One of the key elements of Toyota Optimal Drive is the new Valvematic petrol engine.
Valvematic is an innovation based on Toyota's proven dual Variable Valve timing - intelligent (dual VVT-i) technology. In addition to the variable timing of the inlet and exhaust valves, Valvematic adds a lift control system that continuously varies the lift of the inlet valves to better control the volume and speed of the intake airflow. This provides a breakthrough in combustion efficiency, ultimately delivering more power from less fuel.
New Avensis maximises efficiency, power and torque through new valvematic technology that allows optimal valve lift and timing to generate top-level performance including a reduction in CO2 emissions and an improvement in fuel consumption of 15 per cent for the manual model and 26 per cent for the CVT, while at the same time increasing power by four per cent compared to the engine used in the previous generation Avensis.
Avensis' new economical 2.0 litre engine, when paired with the six speed manual transmission sips only 6.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions are 164 grams per kilometre when tested to the combined European directive (70/220/EEC). The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with seven speed sport sequential manual mode tests at 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres with CO2 emissions of 165 grams per kilometre.
The 2.0 litre valvematic engine delivers 112kW of power at 6200rpm and 196Nm of torque at 4000rpm.
New Avensis is longer, wider and has a greater luggage capacity than its precursor. With an overall length of 4765mm and width of 1810mm, it boasts a luggage capacity of 543 litres, or 1609 litres with the rear seats down.
Cargo space in the tourer is more flexible, with cargo rails available to divide and secure separate loads. Retractable rear seats have a one-touch folding mechanism to create extra space when needed.
The new platform provides an excellent balance of high-speed stability and low speed agility with upgrades to both front and rear suspension improving ride and comfort.
New Avensis is equipped with the latest-generation Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) as standard. Brake Assist (BA) is also included and works with the ABS and EBD to provide maximum braking performance in emergency situations.
Vehicle Stability Control Plus (VSC+) is a new feature fitted as standard specification. This operates with the Traction Control (TRC) to improve vehicle traction and safety in low grip conditions, such as rain, snow, or gravel.
VSC+ enhances the protection provided by conventional VSC systems by adding steering torque assistance to help the driver counteract the yaw movement that occurs when the vehicle under or oversteers in reaction to an emergency. This means that in an extreme situation, the driver may sense some torque movement on the steering wheel in a given direction, adding to the adjustment made by the VSC.
New Avensis is equipped as standard with nine airbags, including a driver's knee airbag, front airbags for the driver and front passenger, two front side airbags and curtain airbags front and rear. A front passenger's airbag on/off switch is included as standard specification for this model, making it safer to fit a child's seat.
Active front seat headrests have been introduced to reduce the risk of whiplash injuries in the event of a rear end collision. These operate automatically should another vehicle run into the back of the car with sufficient speed, moving the headrests forward and up to support the head.
ISO-fix child seat anchor points are provided as standard for the rear seats.
Incorporated into the three spoke leather steering wheel are audio, multi information display, Bluetooth and cruise control functions. Avensis is equipped with a single disc in-dash MP3/WMA CD player with six speakers, Bluetooth phone capability and security system plus an audio input jack.
The tourer has 16-inch alloy wheels and rear privacy glass. Roof rails in silver are integrated for a more streamlined look.
Security is provided by an engine immobiliser, an alarm and double door locking functions in the Avensis.
Standard items include front seats with slide and recline functions, driver's height adjustment and power lumber support.
Additional creature comforts normally reserved for more luxury grade models include rain-sensing windscreen wipers, climate control air conditioning with separate driver and passenger temperature adjustment, a rear fog light, cruise control, and an automatic glare resistant electrochromic inside rear view mirror
New Avensis is available in five exterior colours, glacier white, silver pearl, graphite, wildfire, and sage.
