Fuel Economy Gain For Camry

Toyota's popular mid-size car, the Camry just got better.

The improved Toyota Camry, available from July, has a fresh new look, improved fuel economy, and enhanced comfort, style and connectivity.

The new Camry range includes the GL, available with 5-speed manual or automatic transmission and the automatic Camry Sportivo. The GLX model is no longer included in the range.

Technical enhancements have lowered fuel consumption for automatic models to just 8.9 litres per 100 kilometres and Camry now meets Euro 4 emission standards, with a more than an 11 per cent improved efficiency over the outgoing model. CO2 emissions have improved to 208 grams per kilometre, according to ADR 81/02 combined results, compared to previous emissions at 233 grams per kilometre

The lower fuel use has been achieved by changes to the powerful 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and the five-speed automatic transmission.

Camry has also been enhanced inside and out with new styling as well as added safety and convenience items.

Outside, both models have new front and rear bumper designs, new radiator grille, headlights and energy efficient LED rear combination lights. The Sportivo gains a more aggressively styled front spoiler for a strong road presence.

Both models ride on new wheels with updated 16 inch steel wheel caps on the GL and five spoke 17 inch sports alloys for the Sportivo.

In the models with automatic transmission, the introduction of flex lock-up control allows the clutch in the torque converter to maintain a half-engaged position, enhancing fuel efficiency and increasing the lock-up clutch's operating range.

During acceleration, efficiency is improved by controlling the amount of drive power distributed from the lock-up clutch and torque converter.

When the driver's foot lifts off the accelerator pedal and the car is decelerating, the point at which fuel will be injected to prevent rough idling or stalling has been reduced to 800rpm (previously 1100rpm).

At the same time, flex lock-up control remains activated to take advantage of the engine's fuel-saving capabilities.

Mapping for the electronic throttle has been revised to take greater advantage of reduced engine friction at lower engine speeds.

Shift points have also been altered to improve fuel efficiency and enhance the overall driving experience.

Camry's alternator pulley now has a one-way clutch to reduce belt tension, thereby reducing drag on the crankshaft.

Inside, Bluetooth hands free phone capability has been added for both models, allowing you to keep in touch safely. GL also adds two speakers and an auxiliary input jack. Sportivo tops the range with both auxiliary and USB input jacks, letting you control and charge a portable MP3 player while on the move. There's also a full-colour monitor and reversing camera for safer reversing.

Camry Sportivo now gets climate controlled air conditioning added, so the driver and front passenger can each set their preferred temperature.

New fabric replaces the outgoing upholstery, with a fresh new exterior colour 'Liquid Metal' complementing the range to complete eight exterior colour options.
