Ugochukwu again as American secures feature race pole position
American Ugo Ugochukwu proved once again to have the edge on ultimate pace around Hampton Downs as he took pole position for Sunday’s Dorothy Smith Memorial race at the first round of the 2026 Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy.
It was the M2 Competition driver’s second pole position of the weekend and was all the more impressive as he had three tenths advantage. Given that the top 17 cars were covered by just under a second, it was a relatively dominant run.
“I was confident coming into this morning but the pace was even better and we have an even bigger gap than yesterday,” Ugo explained afterwards. “I was feeling at one with the car.” And it showed – Ugo’s fast laps always retained a decent margin to the next driver.
The session really came alive only in the dying moments when the fuel loads were at their lightest and it was Hitech’s Jin Nakamura who got closest, just under three tenths shy, with Louis Sharp for mtec, Hitech’s Kanato Le and Red Bull Junior Ernesto Rivera all – remarkably – within three tenths of the pole position time.
Behind the fast five and in the second half of the top ten there was plenty of interest. American Nolan Allaer, from IndyNXT, continued an eye-catching weekend with a solid sixth fastest time, a fraction ahead of Saturday race winner Zack Scoular. Brit Freddie Slater was next up for M2 Competition, playing catch up throughout the session after an early moment delayed his progress. He would ultimately take eighth fastest time.
Perhaps the best story was two-time rally champion Kalle Rovanperä’s big step forward in performance to qualify ninth – which had been sixth until the dying moments of the session until he was pipped by hundredths of a second by American Allaer, Scoular and Slater.
Kalle’s 1 minute 29.751 was his best lap of the weekend by some margin and set himself up for a start on the inside of the fifth row of the grid alongside James Wharton – and ahead of Supercars star Ryan Wood in 11th.
Sebastian Manson and China’s Yuanpu Cui both dipped under 1 minute 30 seconds to go 122th and 13th, with Fionn McLaughlin 14th, followed by Australian Jack Taylor for Giles Motorsport, Yevan David, Cooper Shipman, Ricardo Baptista and Trevor LaTourette.
