The 23-strong grid for the 2014 Toyota Racing Series heads for Cromwell’s new Highlands Motorsport Park circuit this weekend.

As the championship reaches its midpoint, racers will take to the track to become the first single-seater category to race at Highlands Park.

In the course of the weekend’s three races, the drivers will have three chances to set and reset lap records for the category.

Currently leading is Estonian Martin Rump, who is also the top rookie. He has 329 points and holds an eight point advantage over second-placed Jann Mardenborough, the 2013 Rookie title holder. Consistency has been key to Rump’s dominant form, with the 17 year old scoring three podium finishes across the six races run to date.

Mardenborough is likewise banking on consistency as the championship reaches its midpoint. He also has three podiums to his credit so far including a race win last weekend at Timaru.

The leading New Zealand driver is Invercargill’s Damon Leitch, with 239 points in fifth place in the championship. The 23-strong field is on track today for initial testing at the circuit.
