John Penny put his decades of experience to good use at Hampton Downs to post the fastest time of the day in testing for this weekend’s penultimate round of the 2023-2024 Toyota 86 Championship.

Penny headed the times in the only dry session of three at the track today, clocking a notable 1 minute 16.954 lap to head William Exton and championship leader Hunter Robb.

Tayler Bryant found his form to go fourth fastest, ahead of Jackson Rooney and Robb’s chief challenger, Tom Bewley.

Bewley and Rooney, however, were the stars of the two wet sessions today at the North Waikato circuit, heading the first session and third session respectively.

Others to go well during the day included Justin Allen, Thomas Mallard, William Morton, Cormac Murphy and Christina Orr-West.

A close contest looks odds on – if the weather allows dry races. In the second session, the gap from Penny at the front to Australia’s Summer Rintoule in 19th place was just over a second.

The action gets underway on Saturday morning with qualifying  in the morning and the first of three races at just after 2.30pm in the afternoon. Sunday brings two more races.
