Oil filters - beware the dangers of almost the same

We compared a Toyota petrol engine oil filter, with two non-genuine oil filters from reputable trade suppliers and saw some interesting results.

We found as the cost of the oil filter reduced, so did the total filter area. The cheapest oil filter had approximately 42% less filter area than the Toyota one.

As the total filter area reduces, so does the filtration effectiveness over time. This means that more frequent changes are required or that your engine will be subject to wear and tear.

For total peace of mind, insist on quality engine oil and a genuine Toyota oil filter.

The Genuine Parts Difference

  • Air Filters
  • Body Parts
  • Brake Pads
  • Clutch Kits
  • Fuel Filters
  • Mufflers
  • Oil Filters - Petrol
  • Oil Filters - Diesel
  • Shock Absorbers
  • Spark Plugs
  • V-Belts - Raw Edged Belts
  • V-Belts - V-Ribbed Belts
  • Air Filters

Toyota Genuine Air Filter elements are multi-layered - rough inside and fine outside which allows them to effectively catch particles of different sizes. Unlike single-layered, non-genuine air filters, the multi-layered elements help resist clogging and have a long service life.

Due to their high recyclability, Full Fabric Air Filters (FFAF) are now being installed in many Toyota vehicles. Standard air filters cannot be installed on vehicles equipped with FFAF.

  • Body Parts

Toyota Genuine Body Parts are made from galvanised, high-strength steel. They last much longer than non-genuine parts which are often made of low grade, non-galvanised steel. Even small body parts are essential to maintaining vehicle safety. Toyota Body Parts undergo extensive development and crash testing to ensure maximum safety in the event of a collision.

Toyota Body Parts fit perfectly. Shaping is often required for non-genuine body parts, which can weaken them and make them liable to rust.

  • Brake Pads

Toyota Genuine Brake Pads are specifically designed for Toyota vehicles, ensuring balanced, stable braking in all temperatures. During manufacturing, all Toyota parts undergo strict quality inspections. Toyota Brake Pads are carefully checked for proper clearance between the brake pad and caliper to ensure smooth braking. Incorrect clearance can result in braking deficiencies.

Genuine Toyota Brake Pads don’t contain asbestos, which is hazardous to the environment. They also have finely processed anti-skim shims preventing high-frequency vibration that causes brake noise.

  • Clutch Kits

The facing on a Toyota Genuine Clutch has grooves, so the car runs smoothly despite the stops and starts of normal driving and is made with durable, environmentally friendly, non-asbestos, glass fibre. They absorb rattles and vibration, ensuring smooth starts and responsive acceleration.

To increase durability, Toyota Genuine diaphragm springs are hardened and coated with chrome. Without this added protection, non-genuine parts may bend or wear easily, shortening the life of the clutch cover, and the life of the part.

  • Fuel Filters

Specifically engineered for Toyota engines, Toyota Genuine Fuel Filters ensure proper fuel flow and optimum engine performance. The honeycomb design of the filter elements maintains the shape and is long lasting. Non-genuine filters easily lose their shape and filtering capability.

Toyota Fuel Filters combine polyester and glass fibres with standard paper filter material to catch small particles without interrupting fuel flow. They are treated with rustproofing on internal and external surfaces. Many non-genuine filters are not treated this way and are susceptible to internal corrosion due to the water content in fuel. Corrosion may result in engine damage.

  • Mufflers

The capacity of a Toyota Genuine Muffler is appropriate for each model. They are equipped with a resonator to reduce noise pollution and are made from stainless or galvanised steel, adding to their durability. The result is smooth running and reduced noise. The capacity of non-genuine mufflers is often not sufficient for the engine's emissions. If exhaust gases can't flow efficiently, even new non-genuine mufflers will emit noise.

The supporting parts on a Toyota Muffler are strong enough to eliminate vibrations. Since many non-genuine supporting parts are poorly constructed, they transmit vibrations to the chassis, which creates noise.

  • Oil Filters - Petrol

Toyota Genuine Oil Filters contain a dual-textured element rough on the outside, fine on the inside which filters particles effectively and resists clogging. Non-genuine oil filters can be thin, finely meshed and prone to tearing and clogging.

For added durability Toyota Oil Filters have heat-resistant, non-stick acrylic rubber gaskets. Non-genuine filters may use gaskets that easily deform or deteriorate, making them prone to leaks. They may also use poorly constructed fitting faces, which could cause engine damage. The Toyota Oil filter has check and relief valves made of durable, heat-resistant rubber. They deliver long-lasting, stable performance.

  • Oil Filters - Diesel

A Toyota Genuine Oil Filter for diesel engines, effectively filters carbon. Non-genuine oil filters may fail to filter carbon, causing the oil to become dirty. This results in black smoke emissions, increased fuel consumption and engine damage.

  • Shock Absorbers

Toyota Genuine Shock Absorbers are specifically designed for each model. As many non-genuine shock absorbers are designed to fit a variety of cars, they fail to enhance performance. They are highly rust-resistant as the cylinders have special coatings and spring sheets made from corrosion resistant steel. Toyota Shock Absorbers include Teflon® processed piston bands and piston rods, galvanised with hard chrome or bearings. Since many non-genuine shock absorbers are not Teflon® processed or galvanised, they wear out faster.

All Toyota Shock Absorbers include bushings. Some non-genuine shock absorbers also include bushings, but they are often designed to fit a variety of housings and if they don’t fit perfectly, you may experience noisy, uncomfortable driving.

  • Spark Plugs

Toyota Genuine Spark Plugs prevent interference with on-board electronics. Non-genuine spark plugs can fail to reduce these interferences. Toyota uses reliable materials and precise construction to create spark plug housings resulting in stable performance and long life. They have a high rate of thermal conduction, ensuring the ideal temperature. Without proper heat conduction, spark plugs tend to run too hot or cold, causing engine misfires or pre-ignition. To work efficiently, engines must have spark plugs with the appropriate heating range, otherwise the plug may fail to ignite, resulting in poor starting, reduced performance on uphill climbs or when carrying a heavy load, and increased fuel consumption.

  • V-Belts - Raw Edged Belts

Plain: The basic configuration for Raw-Edge belts. Strong gripping power makes it suitable for passenger cars and small trucks.

Multi-Ply: Layers of bias cloth are added to the plain belt to make it last longer.

Cogged: A corrugated underside decreases energy loss caused by bending. Because even larger size belts are flexible, cogged V-belts are often used for diesel-powered vehicles such as trucks and buses.

  • V-Belts - V-Ribbed Belts

These are thinner and have a larger contact area than Raw-Edge belts, increasing their flexibility and efficiency in transferring power. Suitable for small and high-performance engines. The bottom layer of a Toyota Genuine V-Belt is rubber-coated to prevent cracking. Heat-resistant Aramide Fibre is used for the top fabric and tension member.

A Toyota Genuine V-Belt is designed specifically for your vehicle. Non-genuine V-belts may not be a perfect fit for your engine. Your engine might not run as smoothly as it could, squeaks and uneven abrasion may occur, requiring early replacement of the belt. Non-genuine belts may have a simple configuration or an inferior combination of materials. They tend to stretch and wear out quickly.

Why should you always ask for Toyota Genuine Parts?

Take a look and see why Toyota Genuine Parts are the way to go every time:

Not all parts work the same

Toyota New Zealand stands behind the quality of all our parts. Can the non-genuine parts providers say the same?
When using Toyota Genuine Parts you know they've been designed to replace the exact part you require. This built-in performance and reliability gives you added peace of mind.

Toyota Genuine Parts are competitively priced

Toyota has very competitive Genuine Parts pricing. Just talk to your local Authorised Toyota Dealership or Toyota Parts and Service Agent.
Even if a non-genuine part does save you a few dollars, the fact that it's cheaper means that the manufacturer probably had to compromise on materials and specifications. And that means it's more likely to fail, so you may well end up having to buy it twice.

Not all parts have the same warranty

All Toyota Genuine Parts come with a 2 year warranty*, honoured by our nationwide dealer network.
Non-genuine parts often come with shorter warranties and it can be harder to trace the manufacturer if something goes wrong.

Beware the danger: If the part is in a Toyota box it must be genuine...

Unfortunately this is not always the case. There are hundreds of counterfeit parts on the market, all trying to mimic the way Toyota Genuine Parts look.
In truth, the only way you can be sure they're genuine is to purchase parts from your Authorised Toyota Dealer or Toyota Parts and Service Agent.

Beware the danger: There is a myth that all parts are made in the same factory – they're just put in different boxes to be sold

Non-genuine parts are made in a wide variety of different factories, so it's impossible to be sure they're the best fit for your vehicle or that they adhere to the same specifications as genuine.
Most non-genuine parts vary in quality. Parts that have been made using lower quality materials can be prone to failure.
By choosing Toyota Genuine Parts you know you're getting the right part, first time. They are exactly the same as the parts you already have in your vehicle.
