Small Business Driver: Warren Adolph Homes

sbd-wah-940x450

For the Auckland founders of Warren Adolph Homes, it all began nearly 40 years ago in woodwork class where they met as sawdust-covered students at Avondale Intermediate. Business partners and friends Warren Adolph and Andrew Clark co-own the house building company and have completed hundreds of new houses and stylish renovations across Central and West Auckland.

Nothing could have prepared them for the disruption caused by COVID-19.  The small company suddenly experienced a worrying drop in building enquiries, as Kiwis “played it safe” from a financial perspective. Warren and Andrew took pay cuts, worked huge hours to drum up new business and actioned a reduced 35-hour working week to ensure job security for their 20-strong team over a volatile period. They were determined to retain their talented builders despite patchy cashflow.

As a self-described ‘small and passionate team’, Warren Adolph Homes’ vision is to create homes that Aucklanders love. Their team is driven, straight-up and goes the extra mile to ensure clients are delighted.

Over the past 30 years, the company has gained business purely through word-of-mouth so accessing the Mediaworks advertising package through Toyota’s Small Business Driver initiative was a huge deal for Warren Adolph Homes.

Warren laughs when recalling the experience of producing their first-ever radio ad during the second Auckland lockdown.

“We couldn’t access the Mediaworks studio in Level 2 so Andrew and I had to squeeze into a wardrobe, throw a duvet over our heads and self-record it on our iPhone. Andrew’s a tall guy so it was a tight fit!”

The advertising had great cut through on Auckland’s airwaves and the company experienced a spike in their website traffic and level of enquiries.

Vehicles represent a large expense so receiving a leased Toyota Highlander to help service their sites has been “a builder’s dream come true!” says Warren.

“I’m so grateful to Toyota and really enjoy driving the Highlander with its fantastic handling, yards of space and comfort for long drives. It’ll be hard to give it back when the year’s up.”

A strong team culture, new marketing investment courtesy of Toyota and MediaWorks and a huge team effort has seen Warren Adolph Homes weather the COVID-19 storm and bounce back. The company has expanded its team, taken on two young apprentices and featured on the cover of NZ House & Garden with one of their villa restorations.
