Toyota and Lexus hybrids subject to an airbag recall

Toyota New Zealand is recalling a small number of hybrid models due to a possible concern with the curtain shield airbag inflators.

Models involved in the recall include the Lexus CT 200h models manufactured between 2010-2012, and Toyota Prius models manufactured between and 2008 – 2012.

It is believed that in some cases a minute crack may occur in the welding which joins the two chambers of both the left hand and right hand side curtain shield airbag inflators, specific to hybrid, and that this could expand over time. If the concern exists, the inflator could possibly separate and partially deploy.  This is not related to previous Takata airbag recalls.

A total of 1,162 New Zealand new models have been identified as part of the recall (308 CT 200h and 851 Prius), with recent investigation confirming a further 823 used import vehicles affected.

This recall is part of a wider global precautionary measure involving 1,433,988 vehicles with no reported cases of this issue occurring in New Zealand.

Owners of the vehicles, which are traceable through registration data, will be contacted by Toyota New Zealand.

The remedy will be completed free of charge by Toyota and Lexus dealerships and is expected to take approximately 2 to 4 hours.
