Dealer Environmental Management

TNZ works closely with Toyota dealers (independent business franchises) to ensure safe and responsible practices when cars are serviced.

We set environmental performance objectives which review their performance. These include nominating an ‘eco-champion’ to co-ordinate dealership activities, complying with regulations, proper handling, treatment and disposal of hazardous wastes and waste water, correct recovery of air conditioning gases (CFCs/HFCs) and undertaking relevant training (e.g. emergency spill management).

A number of dealers also sponsor projects in their local community.

Cooke Howlison Toyota, Dunedin.  Case study of the Toyota dealer and community sponsorship

Cooke Howlison Toyota has been a proud sponsor of the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust since 1989.

Yellow-eyed penguins are unique to NZ. They are found along the south east coast of the South Island and neighbouring sub-antarctic islands. Unfortunately today, they are the rarest of all the world’s penguins, primarily due to habitat destruction and pest predation.

Cooke Howlison provides the Trust with a Toyota Hilux 4x4 for their field work: pest control, fencing to protect nests from wandering stock, using indigenous plants to create shelter. This is often in the Trust’s remote reserves, many of which can only be accessed by four-wheel drive.

“Everyday this tough workhorse demonstrates its reliability to us as it negotiates the rugged coastline delivering heavy fencing equipment and trees. We are indebted to Cooke Howlison Toyota for their long and continued sponsorship” said Executive Officer, Sue Murray.

The Hilux is also a useful tool for raising awareness of the penguin’s plight. Its colourful design is seen throughout the region at fundraising campaigns, local community presentations, festivals, conferences and school visits.

Cooke Howlison Toyota also supports the work of the Orakonui Ecosanctuary.
