Environmental Management

Toyota has led the way in developing environmentally responsible vehicles, however our efforts go much wider to encompass how we run our business and how we can contribute towards a more sustainable society.

In 1992 Toyota published its Earth Charter which formalised the values embraced by the company since its foundation, and placed environmental management as a top priority. Toyota’s philosophy is to be a trusted corporate citizen conducting open and fair business activities that respect the law in every nation.

In order to conduct environmental activities of the highest level, Toyota promotes environmental management systems in each country and area of operation and builds strong relationships with its customers, business partners, local communities, and employees.

Toyota NZ is a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), Japan. TMC co-ordinates global sustainability activities through a dedicated CSR & Environmental Affairs Division. For details of TMC global activities, ‘Guiding Principles’ and ‘Contribution towards Sustainable Development’, please view TMC’s Sustainability Report.

To manage our activities in NZ, we have a range of policies and reporting covering all operations. We promote a culture of environmental responsibility and ‘kaizen’ or continuous improvement. For more details please follow the links below.

We implement our work programme with Environmental Action Plans. The objectives and performance measures are set and reviewed annually. These are integrated into our wider Business Plan, which is reviewed and endorsed by TNZ senior management.

In 2005 we appointed a full-time Environmental Officer to develop and integrate environmental programmes across all TNZ operations by working with all departments.

In 2007 our corporate environmental and social management practice was recognised as one of the leading companies in a national review. We received a Gold Award (top five place) in the Corporate Social & Environmental Responsiveness (CSER) Survey run by Massey University.

This survey benchmarks a company’s ability to assess their impacts, strategic priorities, governance and reporting processes.
